How does the transfer of a domain name take place?

When both parties agree on a price, usually the buyer needs to send first the money. A paypal transaction is usually secure enough, as paypal will credit back the buyer in case that the seller does not deliver the website or domain. However, more precautions such the use of escrow.com should be taken for expensive domains or websites.

When payment is received, the seller needs to transfer the domain name towards the buyer's registrar. This operation is generally free (called free push) if the buyer and the seller use the same registrar. Otherwise, the buy has to ask for the transfer of the domain to its registrar, which generally costs the price of one year registration. The buyer will need an authorization code, which must be asked by the seller to his registrar.

To succeed, the transfer needs that at least one of the whois contacts accept the transfer at any time during the five next days and none of them refuses it. For most national extensions, paperwork is needed.

A transfer can also be impossible for some time if the expiry date is too close or/and if a transfer or a registration has occurred in the last 60 days. In this case, a free push is the only solution to transfer a domain name.

When the buyer has taken control of the domain name, he or she need to change the DNS setting according to its web hosting or parking program.
